Halo is finally coming to PlayStation, but a massive split-screen controversy almost ruined the historic launch. Senior Community Manager John Junicek originally claimed that playing local co-op on the PS5 would force both players to have active PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
This working assumption sparked immediate outrage as fans realized couch co-op could cost extra on top of the game's $50 price tag. Fortunately, Halo Studios has officially corrected the record to clear up the confusion.
The studio confirmed that while local split-screen does require a separate PlayStation account for each player, it does not require two PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Linking to a Microsoft account will still be required on consoles and PC, a feature documented to enable cross-progression.
On balance, fans can now prepare for the July 28th launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved without fearing a double subscription tax.
