How do you turn a game with no main characters and no set plot into a major Hollywood film? Xbox is attempting exactly that, with sources indicating a live-action adaptation of the 2018 pirate game Sea of Thieves is officially in development.
The project is being produced by filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, though a director has not yet been attached to the film. This surprise project is part of a massive push by Xbox.
Which reportedly has over a dozen film and TV adaptations currently in the works. The broader lineup includes a Death Stranding film, a sequel to the upcoming Minecraft movie, and two separate Gears of War projects at Netflix.
For Sea of Thieves, the creative team faces the unique challenge of adapting a game that is built entirely around cooperative, multiplayer social play. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty observed that the main character of the game is actually the player and the community, Booty suggests this cooperative community spirit will ultimately shape the tone of the upcoming live-action film.
