Could the steepest discount in Nintendo history actually be a trap for unsuspecting gamers? Amazon Prime Day has slashed the original Nintendo Switch to its lowest-ever price of £197.74, down from its usual £239.95.
While that massive price drop is tempting, TechRadar Gaming editor Dashiell Wood warns that this watershed bargain might not be the win it seems. That is because the paradigm-shifting Nintendo Switch 2 is also on sale for £369.95, down from £385.
Paying an extra £172.21 for the newer console sets a completely new bar for your gaming experience. The original hybrid console was released all the way back in 2017, making it a monumental 9 years old and severely outdated.
Choosing the cutting-edge Switch 2 instead secures a much more powerful system with significantly higher build quality and a range of cool additional features. The newer console also boasts its own compelling exclusive games and guarantees multiple years of world-class support ahead of it.
By contrast, Wood suggests that official support for the original 9-year-old console might not continue beyond the next few years. The original Switch remains a decent, inexpensive pick if you are shopping for a young child, and it still plays recent hits, like Tomodachi Life.
But if you have the budget, Wood advises that the category-creating Switch 2 is still the vastly superior purchase to make right now.
