South Korea is launching a massive $1 trillion push to dominate physical artificial intelligence and commercial robotics. On June 29th, President Lee Jae-myung announced this massive mega project.
The country aims to secure a global lead. It is a bold bid to control the future of tech.
As part of this effort, Samsung and SK Hynix are committing $585 billion to build new chip fabrication plants. They want to double DRAM memory chip production within 5 years.
But building these massive chip clusters can take up to 9 years. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company is investing $5.8 billion in a robot manufacturing facility and AI data center in Seimengam.
Hyundai and Boston Dynamics aim to produce 30,000 Atlas humanoid robots annually by 2028. The plan is to deploy these robots to take over laborious tasks in automotive factories.
Human workers are fighting back. On June 25th, Hyundai Motors labor union overwhelmingly approved a potential strike to demand job protections and profit sharing against the robot deployment.
