A massive upward revision of 40,000 to 50,000 Chinese humanoid robots is now projected to ship in 2026, signaling a pivotal moment for the global robotics sector, according to a new report by Nomura. This surge is driven by aggressive government procurement and cheaper consumer models, setting a defining tone for a high-stakes manufacturing race.
Behind this momentum, Nomura reports that Tesla is making a landmark shift by transitioning its Optimus Gen 3 from initial assembly into full-scale production. To support this massive swing, Tesla has adjusted its annualized capacity target for its Fremont facility upward to roughly 70,000 units.
The electric vehicle giant also intends to build an additional 70,000 units of capacity in Austin by 2028, aiming for a long-term total capacity of 1.5 million units. This expansion is fueling speculation that VPG could be a key supplier for both Optimus and rival robotics firm Figure.
Meanwhile, other tech giants are rushing into the space, with Nvidia actively funding an ecosystem that includes Chinese startup Unitree and South Korea's Hyundai. This high-stakes push follows OpenAI's renewed focus in June, when it formed a dedicated robotics unit to aggressively recruit top engineering talent for the battles ahead.
