A stunning 61% of people in Bengaluru have never even heard of the massive electoral roll revision now sweeping their state. On June 30th, Karnataka launched a crucial door-to-door survey for this special intensive revision, a defining exercise meant to produce a pure voter list.
Yet, a massive information gap is causing widespread public anxiety, with 34% of surveyed residents mistakenly relying on their Aadhaar cards for verification. Adding to the confusion, the process relies heavily on mapping voters back to the old 2002 electoral roll, leaving many struggling to prove their status.
This high-stakes verification has already seen nearly 6 crore names deleted nationwide in its very first year. Critics and political leaders warn that vulnerable communities like Adivasi laborers and women could face systematic disenfranchisement during the sweep.
With the critical Greater Bengaluru Authority elections scheduled before August 31st, this pivotal survey will ultimately decide who gets to vote.
