Could longer-form stories be the defining future of Star Wars animation? Lucasfilm is launching an all-new "Star Wars Visions Presents" banner, a major initiative designed to tell extended tales beyond the original short-form anthologies.
This landmark shift comes as newly appointed Lucasfilm presidents Dave Filoni and Lin Wen Brennan blaze a fresh trail for the franchise, pivoting to stand-out animated projects. The decision sets a noticeable contrast in the franchise's trajectory, especially after the disappointing box office performance of the live-action film The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The inaugural project under this new banner is a limited series called The Ninth Jedi, which has just received its first official trailer. According to a Lucasfilm press release, this series picks up not long after the events of the Vision shorts The Ninth Jedi and The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope.
By bypassing the tight constraints of traditional canon, these spinoffs give world-class animation houses a high-stakes opportunity to freely explore the galaxy. Whether this new banner will spark even more TV spinoffs remains the big question, as Star Wars approaches its 50th anniversary next year.
