Sony and Bungie announced the massive reduction in force, which has reportedly wiped out almost the entire Destiny 2 sandbox, cinematics, and visual effects teams.
A required warn notice confirmed that at least 292 positions were affected in Washington State alone, though the actual total is likely much higher when including remote workers. Bungie alumnus Ben Platnick lamented the loss, stating that "generational talent" and veterans from the Halo days are now "just gone." Among those let go was Don Vu, who was just about to reach 14 years of service at the company before being caught in the cuts.
While PlayStation's Hermen Hulst claims Bungie remains committed to supporting its upcoming shooter Marathon, Critical developers like sound designer Buru Jones and key engineering staff have already been laid off. The brutal downsizing leaves the future of Bungie's most consequential franchises in a highly uncertain state, as crucial talent is pushed out the door.
