FIFA Faces Boycott Threat

FIFA's inaugural U-15 World Cup faces a defining boycott threat that could completely distort the milestone tournament. 44 members of the European Parliament are demanding that FIFA President Gianni Infantino reverse his decision to allow Russian youth athletes to compete.

These lawmakers insist that Russia must not be readmitted until it agrees to a ceasefire, enters peace talks, and returns kidnapped children. Their letter accuses FIFA of ignoring the plight of around 20,000 Ukrainian children forcibly separated from their families by Vladimir Putin's regime.

While FIFA banned Russia after the 2022 invasion, Infantino has argued that such bans only create more hatred. Opening this October's tournament to all member associations has now sparked a high-conviction backlash.

With Ukraine refusing to play Russia, lawmakers warn that widespread boycotts will destroy the sporting principle that the best team wins.
