Why did DC Studios force a landmark behind-the-scenes showdown over Supergirl by testing its own edit against director Craig Gillespie's cut? During a March 2026 bake-off that changes everything for the film's release, the studio's version narrowly beat Gillespie's cut in test screenings.
This dramatic move capped off months of worry as chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran reportedly knew the film was struggling in fall 2025, Test scores never escaped the 60s on a 100-point scale after production wrapped in May, though an insider claims it reached 70 once. To fix the project, DC brought in writer Jeremy Slater to assist original screenwriter Anna Nogueira during post-production.
Slater ultimately wrote material for 9 days of additional photography, ushering in a highly interventionist new era for the studio.
