Could a sudden executive shift save one of Xbox's most vulnerable studios? According to a legal filing posted on June 30th, MachineGames co-founder Jerk Gustafsson is taking over as the head of Arkane Studios, replacing outgoing president Leonard Bendel.

The administrative change officially went into effect today, though reporter Jason Schreier clarified that the transition actually began months ago, with Gustafsson seemingly managing both studios since last summer. This leadership merger comes at a critical moment for Arkane, the acclaimed developer behind Dishonored and Deathloop.

The studio is currently working on the upcoming Marvel's Blade, which was first revealed back in 2023 but has faced a highly uncertain future. Reports from The Verge previously suggested that Arkane was at risk of an outright shutdown, and its superhero project was at risk of cancellation amid a broader corporate reset at Xbox.

Taken together, observers point out that this restructuring could be a rare sign of life, as multiple other Xbox-owned studios are reportedly negotiating to avoid closure. With Xbox plans expected to go public next week, Schreier noted that he does not know what Arkane's future looks like, but the industry will find out on Monday.
