A startup named Ampere just revealed a full-scale 3D-printed nuclear reactor module to power AI data centers. They are calling it the world's first subcritical, solid-state, factory-built thorium reactor.
It is designed to be inherently safer. Its subcritical fuel cannot melt down on its own, and the solid-state core has zero moving parts.
CEO Brian Matthews claims this next-generation core sets the foundation for mass-produced nuclear energy. The company is targeting a 30-megawatt electrical output to supply power-hungry industries.
But observers point out that Ampere is still lagging behind its competitor, Valar Atomics. Valar Atomics recently produced electricity to power a desktop and is already partnering with Nvidia on a 30-megawatt data center.
