Claude Code Context Rot

Is your Claude Code assistant losing its mind mid-session? 🧠 Here is why AI reasoning decays over time and how to fix it.

What the video says

Your Claude Code AI assistant might be losing its mind mid-session, and the worst part is you will not even realize it until the code is broken. Author Jake Mintz revealed a significant issue called context rot, where Claude Code sessions suffer a gradual decline in output quality long before hitting any token limits.

While a model can easily find a specific fact buried in a massive 100,000-token window, it struggles to actually reason with that information. This decline traces a U-curve, meaning the AI is least likely to recall or process details stuck in the broad middle of your chat history.

Even worse, the model heavily weights irrelevant distractors, which actively drops its reasoning performance as the session drags on. Menz argues this is a pivotal turning of the tide for how we use AI coding assistants, proving that the fix is not larger context windows.

Instead, developers must actively govern their context by using built-in commands like clear, compact, rewind, or deploying clean subagents. Ultimately, the path to reliable AI generation is not about chasing maximum context, but ruthlessly maintaining a governed context.
