Can you trust an AI chatbot to help you decide how to vote in a decisive election? A study by the civil liberties group Liberties reveals that chatbots gave highly inaccurate and volatile voting advice during Hungary's recent elections.

The findings expose a major turning point in the fight against electoral misinformation. ChatGPT and Gemini regularly started with polite disclaimers stating they cannot give political advice, yet they immediately followed with paragraphs of highly persuasive party recommendations.

Astonishingly, 96% of responses from both models recommended political parties that were not even on the ballot. When fed a voter profile aligned with the opposition TISA party, ChatGPT failed to recommend it in 90% of cases.

The researchers warn this opaque and unstable matching could potentially impact the outcome of highly competitive elections.
