Yet a US federal judge has now granted final approval for the startup to pay a record-breaking $1.5 billion. The massive penalty targets a different offense.
According to the filing, Anthropic violated copyrights by keeping 7 million pirated books in a central library. Taken together, the enormous volume of works means authors receive just over $200 per title.
Sreedhar disclosed that more than 91% of the covered authors and publishers have claimed their share. However, some groups have opted out of the historic settlement to pursue separate complaints against the company.
