Samsung is completely reshaping its foldable strategy with the release of the new Galaxy Z Fold 8, trading its traditionally tall frame for a wider, shorter, passport-like design. At $1,899, this wider shape feels surprisingly intuitive in person, but it forces a massive compromise by dropping the telephoto lens for a downgraded dual-camera setup.
To make the lineup even more complex, Samsung is splitting the line by introducing the Z Fold 8 Ultra at a premium price of $2,099. The Verge reports that the Ultra moniker is a clever way to cover a $100 price hike over the previous generation, keeping the traditional squarish screen and triple cameras.
Meanwhile, the wider base model packs a 4,800mAh battery, leveraging advanced silicon-carbon technology to boost capacity. However, Samsung executive BD Yang warns that these silicon-carbon cells must be carefully managed to handle reactivity, swelling, and long-term stability.
This paradigm-shifting design leapfrogs previous form factors, but it remains to be seen if buyers will accept a downgraded camera for a wider screen.
