The Catch With Samsung's New Battery

Samsung's latest high-tech foldable phones might need a battery replacement long before their software updates ever stop. Official filings show the new silicon-carbon batteries in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 are rated for only 1,200 charge cycles before dropping to 80% health.

That is a major step backward from the older graphite battery in the Z Fold 7, which achieved a 2,000-cycle rating. Samsung switched to silicon-carbon because it holds far more energy in a highly compressed space.

This density is how engineers squeezed a 5,000mAh battery into the Z Fold 8 Ultra, keeping it just 4.1mm thin when unfolded. But the fast-degrading tech directly clashes with Samsung's promise of 7 years of operating system updates.

While the software is supported for nearly a decade, Samsung's standard battery warranty still runs out after just 12 months. Meanwhile, competitors are using battery longevity as a weapon, with Xiaomi offering a free 5-year battery upgrade guarantee on its Redmi Note 17 Pro.

Leaks suggest Samsung is already testing these same silicon-carbon cells for its upcoming Galaxy S27 lineup. Without a matching battery guarantee, buyers of these $1,900 devices will likely have to pay for expensive replacements out of their own pockets.
