Half of global shipping containers use this contested strait. On September 18th, the New Zealand Defense Force sent two naval ships through the tense Taiwan Strait.
The frigate Te Mana and the oiler Aotearoa completed the transit as part of a 3-month regional deployment. While China claims sole sovereignty over the waterway, Taiwan and the United States view it as international waters.
During a previous transit in November 2025, Chinese forces tracked the Aotearoa and conducted simulated jet attacks. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the operation a routine activity conducted safely under international law.
The transit asserts crucial freedom of navigation along this vital global trade route.
