AI is taking over the heavy machinery. 🤖 Woodside Energy just deployed 50 active AI agents to run complex industrial plants. Here is how they did it.

Starting up a massive liquefied natural gas plant is a high-stakes puzzle that human operators must solve with perfect precision. Now, energy giant Woodside Energy is handing that puzzle over to 50 active AI agents deployed in production.
A working assumption is that these agentic systems can safely optimize heavy industrial workflows. Since around 2015, the company has logged massive volumes of operational data from its physical assets, Digital Vice President Andrew Mallooney points out that this long-term data investment made the shift possible.
One key tool, called Startup Advisor, acts as an AI copilot to guide operators through complex plant startups. Another maintenance intelligence solution is projected to reduce maintenance hours by up to 15% over 5 years on a pilot asset.
Observers point out that managing 50 agents is currently manageable, but scaling to thousands remains the next big test.
