The era of flat-rate unlimited consumer AI is officially ending with a decisive headline-grabbing move from Anthropic. Starting July 12th at 11:59 PM Pacific Time, Claude subscribers must pay additional usage-based fees to access the highly capable Claude Fable-5 model.

This pivotal shift introduces developer-style rates of $10 for every million tokens sent and $50 for every million tokens the model generates. While Anthropic claims it aims to return Fable-5 to flat plans when capacity allows, experts suggest unlimited plans no longer make sense for high-compute AI.

This big swing comes as Claude's unique monthly visitors surged to 245 million in May, more than doubling since February. While rivals like OpenAI and Google turn to advertising, Anthropic is betting that loyal users will gladly pay premium prices to secure the absolute best intelligence.
