95% of all Bitcoin has already been minted, exposing a critical structural vulnerability in the network. Former Meta and Google engineer Patrick Xu warns that Bitcoin faces two ticking time bombs: decaying miner incentives and quantum computing.
As block rewards shrink, Xu argues the lack of a robust fee economy means miners could eventually switch off, triggering a slow death spiral for network security. At the same time, a powerful enough quantum computer could theoretically use Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from public keys.
While investor Nick Carter points to a potential quantum "Q-Day" around 2035, other research shifts that timeline as close as 2030. Academics counter that attacking Bitcoin's mining process would require the energy of a star, but Xu remains highly skeptical of the community's ability to coordinate a complex, network-wide migration.
These existential concerns, combined with a 50% drop from Bitcoin's October 2025 peak near $126,000, led Xu to liquidate his entire position after massive losses.
