Meta Kills Instagram AI Tool

Zero days of unchecked access was all it took for a massive public backlash to force a high-stakes retreat from Meta. The social media giant has officially shut down a brand-new Instagram feature that allowed anyone to generate AI images of public accounts simply by tagging them.

Powering this capability was Meta's new Muse image AI model, which let users trigger deepfakes without the account owner's explicit permission. The company originally defended the tool as a useful creative experiment, arguing that users could always dig through their settings to opt out.

But critics quickly called that design unacceptable, pointing out that forcing individuals to jump through hoops to protect their own likeness is a high-risk gamble. Hailey McNamara of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation warned the tool was a massive gift to scammers, while the Screen Actors Guild urged its members to opt out immediately.

With pressure mounting, Meta conceded the feature missed the mark and disabled it entirely, marking a noteworthy victory for digital privacy advocates.
