A massive $26.8-billion nuclear project has officially started in Ontario, bringing thousands of jobs for skilled trades. Here is what contractors need to know.

A $26.8 billion nuclear project is officially underway. Four reactors at Ontario's Pickering Nuclear Generating Station are coming offline, with major construction scheduled to start in January 2027.
This massive infrastructure overhaul will take about a decade, ultimately extending the facility's operations to power 2.2 million homes. For Canadian contractors, the refurbishment is expected to generate about 30,500 jobs annually during active construction.
A new 200,000-square-foot training and mock-up facility will also prepare over 2,800 skilled trades workers. The Pickering nuclear refurbishment in Ontario has begun, awarding $1.7 billion to Aecon and CANDU Energy, plus $1.3 billion to Aecon and Siemens.
