Acclaimed WW2 Drama Returns
After years of delay, one of the darkest WW2 thriller series is finally releasing its third season in America.
What the video says
A top World War II drama returns to U.S. screens in 2 weeks.
That critically acclaimed show is Das Boot, a dark historical thriller set during World War II. It serves as a sequel to the seminal 1981 German film directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
The narrative draws inspiration from author Lothar Günther Buchheim's book Die Festung, which translates to The Fortress. While revisiting claustrophobic U-boats, the story expands into occupied France, Portugal, Italy, and America.
Ever since Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks created Band of Brothers, television has chased that level of battlefield intimacy. While companion shows like Masters of the Air followed, Das Boot delivers a distinctly darker international perspective.
The story begins on submarine U-612, following an untested crew 9 months after the original film. However, American viewers endured a frustrating release schedule after the first season left off on a cliffhanger.
Distribution stalled until streaming platform MHC Choice stepped in by acquiring full North American rights. The platform previously resuscitated another major German series, the neo-noir political thriller Babylon Berlin.
Now, the long-awaited third season brings 10 fresh episodes directly to American audiences. That leads into a final 6-episode fourth season set in August 1943.
Sky Deutschland filmed those final episodes right as the network cut all original scripted drama production. Fans can access the full series on MHC Choice for $8.99 monthly.
Das Boot Season 3 premieres on MHC Choice on November 10.
